| About Teamsters Canada
Teamsters Canada is an organization that provides services to our organization’s Local Unions and Joint Councils across the country. The various services include, among others, training for local delegates and officers, a legal department, a full-time lobbyist in Ottawa, a communications department, and a recruiting assistance department.
The organization’s executive board includes a president and two regional vice-presidents, seven members, in addition to three trustees, and an executive assistant.
Teamsters Canada is an independent union that has existed in the country since 1906 (in the United States, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters was founded in 1903). We are affiliated with a number of union organizations and, of course, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which has 1.4 million members in North America.
Teamsters Canada has organized nearly 20 000 new members in the last few years after its merger with other unions and dozens of organizing campaigns.
Teamsters Canada does not give its support to any political group, but rather works with all parties to further the cause of workers.
| Values, Vision and Actions
Solidarity, respect, democracy, and environmental responsibility are values that our organization’s 125,000 members share and apply every day. These values are the cornerstone of our actions in this modern and open Canadian society in which we live.
The Teamsters Union’s vision is based on the fact that all spheres of human activity are closely related. We think that Canadian workers must be deemed partners who contribute to the economic and social health of our country.
We believe that an organization such as ours must provide an expanded offering to its members. Educating them, informing them, and taking a stand on their behalf enables the workers we protect to have a say in this complex reality that is today’s labour market. In addition, the democracy that has been established over the course of our 103-year history has made us an organization that is best suited to fill the needs of the largest number of workers.
The theory that holds that supporters of the right and the left must be in opposition to one another is, in our opinion, obsolete. We believe that pragmatism is a powerful common denominator that benefits everyone.
An organization can have values and a vision, but these must still be translated into concrete action that will benefit not only our members but all Canadians.
Our actions are summed up by our slogan: "We work for you and your family."
